How it Works
Intro to Curriculum
Open to all experience levels, One Mic Project is driven by the needs, interests, and abilities of the participants in the program. We’re capable of producing a wide variety of genres, from hip hop to country music to rock and everything in between.
The path to completion is different every time, but the goal of each project is to end with a professionally produced song that honors the intentions and voice of the songwriter(s).
Working with All Skill Levels
When working with songwriters with little or no experience we typically start with lyrics. I will have the participant improvise melody to the lyrics and I will help them harmonize the melody.
During the harmonization process, I will offer several different choices, including ones I know “won’t work” to ensure that participants have a sense of creative ownership of the song, even if they have limited musical knowledge
When working with more advanced songwriters, the process is dependent upon the direction the participant wants to take. These sessions take the shape of a producer working with a musician, helping guide the creative process.
Starting with Words
Some participants, especially those without much musical experience, start with writing words. Specific lessons focus on the need of the participants, but include topics like:
How understanding song types can help us understand our own ideas
What makes effective storytelling?
How do we turn everyday observations into powerful song lyrics?
Starting with Music
Other participants, especially those with musical experience, prefer to start with a musical idea. Specific lessons focus on the need of the participants, but include topics like:
What are different types of song structures and which one will best serve my idea?
How can I create an effective build?
What type of beat best serves my personal sense of flow?
The end result
Regardless of the journey taken, the end result is the same: Participants receive a mixed and mastered copy of their song that they are then able to share with friends and family.
